The Facebook Outage

Facebook and all related services are currently BACK ONLINE, as of 10:50PM BST on the 4th of October.

This comes straight off the heels of the Wall Street Journal releasing The Facebook Files, and a day after the BBC and the Guardian released information about The Pandora Papers, which leads some people to believe the outage may be related to these leaks.

Downdetector reports show that people started reported the outage at around 4:28PM BST on October 4th 2021.

Internet security researcher Brian Krebs tweeted:

"Confirmed: The DNS records that tell systems how to find or got withdrawn this morning from the global routing tables. Can you imagine working at FB right now, when your email no longer works & all your internal FB-based tools fail? To be more precise (and Geek Factor 5) the BGP routes serving Facebook's authoritative DNS were withdrawn, rendering all Facebook domains inaccessible. That's per @DougMadory , who knows a few things about BGP/DNS."

During the outage, Facebook's DNS records showed up as empty.

Rumours (Not Confirmed)

Facebook is Gone

There are rumours that someone has deleted large sections of Facebook's routing, which would mean Facebook is GONE, not down.

The rumour starts from Twitter account The Academy @BenjaminEnfield, this is a music (?) related account that appears to be verified. The Tweet states :

So, someone deleted large sections of the routing.... that doesn't mean Facebook is just down, from the looks of it.... that means Facebook is GONE.[1]

The Rest of the Clearnet Will Follow

An anon on 4chan claiming to work for a major global internet entity said "I work for a major global internet entity and I am hearing whispers that there will be a mass internet outage event just after noon EST (approx 15 minutes). First, social media networks will go down followed by the rest of the clearnet. It is already beginning. I am sorry."
